Personal Care - Lip Care

Dry, chapped and sore lips are a common problem, especially during hot or cold weather.

As well as through climactic conditions, lips can become chapped or cracked due to excessive licking of the lips or as a side effect of certain medications.

There is also a more severe form of chapped lips called cheilitis, which can be caused by an infection. Symptoms of cheilitis include red, swollen patches in the corners of your mouth where your lips meet. As well as causing pain, cheilitis can cause bleeding and blisters – leading to the condition sometimes being confused with cold sores.

There are things you can do to prevent dry and sore lips. Alongside drinking lots of water to prevent dehydration, using a lip balm containing petroleum jelly or beeswax is one of the most effective methods.

Vaseline Original Lip care is made with triple-purified petroleum jelly and instantly softens and soothes lips. As it locks in moisture, it also helps repair – not just coat – your lip barrier.

Nivea Lip Care balm is another solution, if you are looking for long-lasting moisture for your lips. Using a formula made with naturally derived ingredients – such as jojoba oil – the balm protects lips from drying out.

Other products that offer fast-acting relief include Blistex Relief Cream, which is a medicated relief for damaged lips. It can be applied frequently during the day and has been designed to relieve and treat cracked, chapped lips

If you suffer from cold sores – caused by the herpes simplex virus – there is Zovirax Cold Sore Cream.

Containing the antiviral medicine Aciclovir, it is effective at both the “tingle” and blister stage of a cold sore outbreak – although for best results, start taking Zovirax as soon as you get the first signs of infection.

You should try a few different lip balms if one isn’t working for you, as each product contains its unique mix of ingredients. And while it might be tempting to pick or bite the flaky skin on your lips, don’t – it can slow down the healing process.
